THEORY IN PRACTICE – IRISH VERSION
THEORY IN PRACTICE: THE STAGES OF TIMBER CONSTRUCTION USING A FULL-SCALE MODEL
Date: 30th October 2023, 31st October 2023, 1st November 2023
Price: 550 euro
The course will consist of a combination of practical installation, theoretical lectures, and insights.
Why participate?
The objective is to acquire the skills necessary for constructing a timber structure in a skilled manner, mastering all the construction stages of a timber building, and avoiding common mistakes during both the design and on-site construction phases.
Duration: 16 hours
Target audience:
-
Construction companies aiming to train their workers through a practical and theoretical course, reducing or eliminating time-consuming on-site training.
-
Construction foremen and project managers.
-
Designers interested in experiencing a timber construction site and comprehending its construction details.
-
Carpenters seeking a deeper understanding of timber construction, excelling in both theory and practice.
In summary
-
The course takes place in an area where timber has always been an integral part of the culture. It offers a unique opportunity to gain comprehensive knowledge of both the theory and practice of timber building. The course consists of 16 hours of practical theory. Each practical session will be accompanied by a theoretical explanation to aid in understanding the construction stages of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glued-laminated timber (glulam) structures. During the course, participants will work on a full-scale model to experiment with:
-
Handling structural elements
-
Installing hidden connections
-
Applying membranes
-
Applying tapes and profiles for airtightness
-
Understanding the correct hygrometric behavior of the construction
-
Waterproofing the building
Course content
Day 1
Arrival and dinner in the city centre of Bergamo
Day 2
Assembly of a section of a timber building, from the foundations to the roof structure. The practical assembly stages will be accompanied by theoretical explanations about the benefits of different connections, installation methods, resistance, stiffness, fire resistance, and ductility. This aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of structure installation, connection solutions, construction details, and construction stages. Specifically, the following details will be installed and examined: ground connection, pillar bases, hidden connections, hold-down and shear angle brackets, and innovative connections.
Waterproofing, airtightness, and wind tightness of timber buildings. Ensuring durability through waterproofing of the ground connection using a concrete curb or aluminum profile, as well as selecting and applying appropriate membranes and tapes.
Day 3
Visit to a cross-laminated timber (CLT) production site, construction site, or a glued-laminated timber (glulam) factory (depending on availability)
Registration includes:
-
2 nights' accommodation in a hotel (Rothoblaas is responsible for organizing and managing hotel arrangements). Additional nights can be requested and will be billed separately.
-
Breakfast and lunch for both days. Two dinners, organized by Rothoblaas, are included in the price.
